Official Statement

On the afternoon of April 9, 2025, the monastic walking group decided to leave Batam, Indonesia, due to not being granted permission to continue the walking meditation practice. The group travelled to Singapore on April 9th, 2025 and departed for Sri Lanka on the evening of April 10, 2025. The group is now walking in Sri Lanka heading toward India.

In Sri Lanka, due to a “letter of accusation” sent by a senior member of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha to Sri Lankan authorities, the group was forced to suspend their pilgrimage for several days.

In the early morning of April 25, 2025, the group boarded a flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka to New Delhi, successfully entered India, and in the afternoon of the same day, they will take a connecting flight to the sacred sites of the Buddha.

Itinerary

  • The group consists of approximately 30 monks who have renounced worldly life to follow the austere practice of Dhutanga in accordance with the teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni, with the aspiration to sow the seeds of peace, wisdom, and inner tranquility wherever they go.

  • Each monk receives only one vegetarian meal per day through alms round in the morning, and refrains from eating anything else for the rest of the day. The group travels solely by foot, practicing mindfulness through walking and meditation. At night, they rest in a seated posture at abandoned houses, cemeteries, empty fields, forested areas, or temple grounds—never staying in private homes or hotels.

  • They do not use money, do not store any belongings beyond the traditional three robes and one alms bowl, and wear robes sewn by hand using discarded cloth found along the way. They abstain entirely from modern conveniences, including phones and all electronic devices, in order to maintain a life of discipline and full awareness.

  • Their pilgrimage began in Vietnam and has taken them through Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They are now continuing their spiritual journey in Sri Lanka toward India.

  • The group’s aspiration is to walk across the world—practicing, cultivating, and offering the spirit of peace, wisdom, and compassion through mindful presence and silent example.

  • Current Location of the Group (as of April 25th, 2025): India.

  • The itinerary may change for various reasons. This is a journey based on circumstances.

DHUTANGA

Dhutaṅga is an ascetic practice tradition originating from the time of the Buddha, emphasizing renunciation, purity, and a simple way of life. It is a path for those who seek liberation through letting go of material attachments, strict observance of precepts, and deep commitment to meditation practice.
